7 Health Benefits of Cashews

There is a misconception when it comes to cashew, that they are unhealthy because they are high in fat. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. There are healthy and unhealthy fats. Healthy fats occur in natural foods such as nuts and avocados whereas unhealthy fats are mainly in processed foods. You will find, as you read on, that cashews have may health benefits due to minerals such as magnesium and copper as well as antioxidants and healthy fats.

Copper is the Culprit

Many of these health benefits are due to the copper found in cashews. Both iron and copper help with general health as well as heart, blood, and skin health more specifically.

Heart Health

Cashews contain monosaturated and polysaturated fats which are both beneficial for heart health because they lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood. Not only does it directly affect the heart, but it affects blood vessel health which aids the heart and keeps it from overworking to compensate.

Lower Blood Pressure

A more specific way that cashews help increase heart health is through lowering your blood pressure. Magnesium and potassium, which are abundant in cashews, cause relaxation of blood vessels and can counteract effects of sodium on blood vessels. They lower your water retention which helps to decrease pressure in your blood.

Relieve Migraine Symptoms

Migraines can be debilitating and hard to treat but cashews have been shown to help with relieving symptoms because of their high magnesium content. Studies have shown that magnesium helps to decrease symptoms by relieving spasms in blood vessels under the scalp that cause migraines.

Cancer Prevention

There are studies that show that antioxidants can help to suppress cancer cell replication and cashews are high in antioxidants. They may not stop the cancer from spreading altogether but they will slow it down to give other treatment the chance to work or even stop it before it starts to replicate. There are also some studies that show that copper aids in reducing cell mutation as well as preventing or slowing colon cancer.

Weight Loss

Weight loss is perhaps the most enticing health benefit to the largest amount of people and adding cashews to your diet can help. Of course, you must add them in moderation to reap the benefits. The monosaturated fats in them help to turn stored fat into free fatty acids. This allows that fat to be burnt and used for energy, which can help with the physical activity side of weight loss and healthy living. The other affect that can lead to weight loss is due to copper, once again, because it helps to increase metabolism and decrease appetite.

Increase Bone Mass Density

Copper is also good at helping to increase bone mass density by increasing bone mineralization. This helps to reduce fractures and can prevent osteoporosis.

Skin Health

As we have established, there are many benefits of the copper that is found in cashews, not least of which is skin health. People often think of collagen when it comes to skin health and elasticity, but copper is another important ingredient to decrease premature loose skin. So, add cashews to your diet for your skin as well as vitamin C rich foods to introduce both collagen synthesis as well as copper into your diet.

If you don’t have cashews in your diet, consider adding them today. In moderation, they can improve your health and your life, and they taste good too.
