Cashew Fruit is as Tasty as Cashew Nuts

Most people would ask, what is the cashew apple if it came up in everyday conversation? It is not nearly as well known as the cashew nut but it is tasty and healthy. One of the major reasons that it isn’t utilized around the world is that it is highly perishable. So, in the focus to harvest cashew nuts, the fruit is often cast off and left to rot. However, they can be eaten raw, cooked, or used to make a liquor called Feni.  

Cashew Fruit:  

The cashew nut grows off the end of the cashew fruit which is shaped like an elongated apple and has a fleshy interior. They are usually green when young and turn red and yellow as the fruit ripen. It is fascinating though that the cashew nut, which is really the seed of the plant, has fully developed before the cashew fruit ripens.  

Can You Eat Cashew Fruit? 

Cashew fruits are edible and they are used frequently in countries that produce the most cashews such as Brazil and India. They can be used to make juice, wine, jam, salads, to put in curries, stir-fries, vinegar, desserts, and a liquor called Feni just to name a few. They are quite a versatile fruit and but they have not made their way to other parts of the world that don’t grow and process cashews because they are highly perishable and don’t travel well. Most of the fruit is left to rot because it is harder to process and must be done immediately after harvesting
